Honey Bee Hive Input Sought

Posted on March 17, 2017 by Joni Heinz

The City is considering adopting rules allowing residents to install a Honey Bee Hive on their property provided they follow rules spelled out in the proposed ordinance to be discussed at the next Public Services Committee meeting on March 28th, 7:00 PM, at City Hall (Hauser Room). The Committee is asking for input from city residents on this matter. The basic rules in the draft ordinance include the requirement to register with the Dept. of Community Development (as required for keeping chicken and fowl), the requirement to notify abutting properties owners (does not require their permission), a 10 foot setback from lot lines and a 25 foot setback from neighboring dwellings as well as other miscellaneous requirements found in most Bee Keeping Ordinances. Keeping bees, when properly done, can be a unique and highly rewarding pastime. Not only can beekeeping help with the global Honey Bee decline. It can be entertaining, educational and a hobby with a sweet reward. Not only will your bees create honey and other products for you to harvest, but if you garden, your fruit and vegetable harvest will also flourish.
