The City of Neenah Parks & Recreation Department is actively responding to widespread storm damage that occurred throughout the City’s park system following recent severe weather. Fallen trees, broken limbs, and scattered debris have impacted many park areas, and staff are working diligently to restore these public spaces safely and efficiently.
To address the damage and ensure public safety, the Department is implementing a three-phase approach to tree cleanup and long-term management:
Phase 1: Ground Cleanup (mostly completed)
Crews will focus first on removing all downed trees, limbs, and debris currently on the ground. This work is essential to reopen pathways, restore accessibility, and eliminate immediate hazards for park visitors.
Phase 2: Removal of Hazardous Hanging Limbs (this phase has started)
The second phase will prioritize the identification and removal of “hangers”—broken or suspended branches that pose an immediate danger. These limbs can fall unexpectedly and represent a significant safety concern for patrons and staff.
Phase 3: Long Term Tree Assessment and Management (3 – 12 months)
After immediate hazards are addressed, Parks & Recreation forestry staff will conduct a thorough assessment of all storm-affected trees. This evaluation will identify trees that are significantly damaged, dead, or dying, ensuring decisions are made with long term health, safety, and sustainability in mind.
Several parks remain temporarily closed due to extensive damage and ongoing cleanup operations. Doty Park, Kimberly Point Park, Riverside Park, and Fresh Air Park will remain closed until further notice. Residents are asked to avoid these areas for their own safety and to allow cleanup crews to work efficiently.
